A Cruise Passport is Probably Not Required

For cruises that begin and end in the same U.S. city, U.S. citizens will not need a cruise passport at the time of this writing.  However, the State Department is constantly changing the guidelines, so check with your cruise line regarding what documents are needed for your specific itinerary.  Even if a passport is not required, though, ShipOuts.com recommends that you have a passport anytime you travel outside of the U.S.A.  If you miss your ship and are stranded in port, or become ill and need to be transported by air, not having a passport could prevent or delay your re-entry in to the States.  Guest who do not possess the proper documentation may be prevented from boarding their ship or from entering a country and also may be subject to fines.  ShipOuts tip - U.S Citizens never need a passport to travel to Puerto Rico.
