Voyages of Discovery was founded in 2002 by noted travel entrepreneur, Gerry Herrod (TWA Getaway, Ocean Cruise Line, Orient Lines). Under its original name, Discovery World Cruises, the line operated the mv Discovery during winter months on cruises to Antarctica, South America and the South Pacific. The balance of the year, the vessel was chartered to UK-based All Leisure Holidays for Northern Europe and Mediterranean cruises under the Voyages of Discovery brand.
All Leisure Holidays acquired the line in May 2005. In July 2007, the line became known as Voyages of Discovery in all markets.
Founded in 1985, All Leisure Holidays specializes in destination-oriented land tours and cruises throughout the world. Trading divisions include the cruise vacation lines Swan Hellenic and Hebridean Island Cruises, and tour operator Discover Egypt.
Discovery guests are 55-plus, active, adventurous and interested in experiencing the world’s more exotic destinations. Their guests are well-traveled individuals and affinity groups looking for “soft” adventure itineraries, interesting and informative lecture programs and an opportunity to visit new destinations.
Voyages of Discovery was awarded the 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2009 "Best value in the Specialty Cruises” from the World Ocean & Cruise Liner Society for the 3rd consecutive year. The line was also voted winner of the “Favorite Niche Cruise Line” at the British Travel Agent Awards in 2007, 2008 and 2009.
